Men's Cross Country Finishes Strong Season

The men's cross country team placed 5th at the state qualifying meet on Thursday in Spencer to cap off a very strong season.  Jace Beall paced the Bombers finishing 23rd in a time of 17:59.  Nathan Wuestenberg ran in 18:01 good enough for a 26th place finish.  Jack Chism finished 28th in a time of 18:03.  Gage Long (36th - 18:18), Chris Lee (38th - 18:20), Erik Ledet (39th - 18:20), and Ryan Ledet (53rd - 18:52) rounded out the Bomber runners.  Sergeant Bluff - Luton, Humboldt, and MOC - Floyd Valley qualified their teams to the state cross country meet next Saturday finishing in the top three.

Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:

"The meet didn't quite go as planned for our men tonight.  We as coaches felt, and still feel, that we had the talent to get to state this season - but the pieces didn't fall into place.  Jace Beall led a tight pack of scoring runners in 23rd place.  Nathan Wuestenberg took 26th, Jack Chism surged to 28th place with Gage Long and Christopher Lee placing 36th and 38th respectively.  Our scoring pack was within 30 seconds of one another - which is good, it's just the pack couldn't move up in the race to reduce our score to the state qualifying range."

"The problem tonight centered around Ryan and Erik Ledet who have dealing with a condition that causes their legs to feel immense burning sensations off and on during races - and much of their high school careers.  One meet might be fine and another not so much.  That hit tonight as Ryan - one of our top runners, was sitting in 7th place in the race when it hit and he fell back nearly 50 spots before collapsing at the finish.  His brother Erik, another top runner for us, had the same issue tonight which led to a sub-par performance also.  That pretty much took us out of contention.  The other runners continued on and ran solid races, but it was not enough and we finished out of the top 3 in 5th place."

"I am proud of these guys nonetheless.  There was not one guy on this team that didn't leave it on the course tonight and give it their all.  It just wasn't our night and we did not get the job done.  This is one of the best groups of guys that I have ever worked with and the leadership shown by these seniors is exceptional.  They will be missed.  The nice thing is that we return a solid core of underclassmen (some that ran tonight - Beall, Chism, Long and Lee and some waiting in the wings for their chance - Jones, Hill, and Ward) that will continue to build on this season."

The Bombers have finished their season.
