Women's Cross Country Wins Norwalk Invitational

The women's cross country team won the Norwalk Invitational on Monday securing their third meet victory this season.  Five Bombers placed in the top 12 including Ellie Twedt (2nd, 19:59), Caitlin Maher (6th - 21:20), Lauren Matthews (7th - 21:25), Rachel Wohlgemuth (8th - 21:30), and Hailey Cole (12th - 21:46).  Summer McVicker (16th, 22:29) and Josie Fleischmann (17th - 22:39) rounded out the Bomber's scoring.  The Bombers defeated Pella by 4 points.

Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:

"Ellie Twedt continues to show growth and consistency.  She placed 2nd overall to top 10 runner (Sievers of Carlisle) by only 9 seconds.  She is cutting the gap with this elite runner-having lost to her by over 1 minute 3 weeks ago at Ballard.  She is running with a lot of confidence and strength right now.  She always gets us off to a great start with team scoring."
"Caitlin Maher ran a competitive and gutsy race placing 6th overall.  We wanted the girls to pack it up and close the gap with Ellie and Caitlin was the one that tried it from the start.  She went out faster than typical, but maintained pretty well and finished strong.  I have a feeling this race will give her confidence moving forward."
"Lauren Matthews, Rachel Wohlgemuth and Hailey Cole closed nicely over the last mile of the race to place 7th, 8th and 12th overall to complete team scoring.  Summer McVicker, our typical #2 runner, struggled the first part of the race with a side stitch, but worked it out and ran well the last half of the race.  Josie Fleischmann rounded out the varsity line-up and capped the victory for the Bombers in a solid 8 team field which included ranked Pella."
"It was nice to win the battle with Pella as they are always a top team in class 3A.  We are about as healthy as we have been all season and I think we will peak nicely heading into the last few weeks of the season.  Anna Zielke ran a great race out of JV and is re-entering the conversation for a spot on varsity and giving us added depth.  I am optimistic that we will be very competitive over the course of the rest of the season."

The Bombers are back in action on Thursday, October 5 when they compete at the Saydel Invitational.  The meet will feature the junior varsity and varsity and start at 5:00 PM.
