Bombers Fall Short In Winning Saydel Invitational

The women's cross country team took second at the Saydel Invitational Meet on Thursday night.  The Bombers were led by Ellie Twedt who finished second with a time of 20:01.  Caitlin Maher placed third following closely behind Twedt with a time of 20:11.  Lauren Matthews, Rachel Wohlgemuth, Summer McVicker, and Hailey Cole all placed in the top 10.

Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:

"The girls ran an excellent race at Saydel.  Ellie Twedt led our girls with a 2nd place finish overall in a time of 20:01.  Caitlin Maher continues to emerge as a star in her freshman season finishing 3rd overall in 20:11.  A very tight pack of 4, including Lauren Matthews, Rachel Wohlgemuth, Summer McVicker and Hailey Cole, with times of 21:04-21:09.  Abbey Ross finished out our varsity line-up with her best time of the season at 21:29."
"There were two variables that kept us from competing at full strength.  We were running without varsity performer Josie Fleischmann who was attending a family funeral and we made a coaching decision to run our athletes hard the night before in prep for regional competition in two weeks.  However, we ran exceedingly well and really showed the mental toughness that we need to be a top 5 team in the state.  We ran well all the way up and down our girls line-up, but Caitlin Maher has really stepped up for us and making us more and more optimistic."
"We will run full strength, hopefully, on Monday and should have a decent chance of repeating as conference champs for the 3rd year in a row.  Then we will switch our focus onto regional competition. We are in good shape right now and on the right step in the process."

The Bombers are back in action on Monday, October 9 when they compete at the Raccoon River Conference Meet at Winterset.  The meet will feature the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity and will start at 4:00 PM.
