Ticket PUNCHED - Women Cross Country Headed Back To State

The women's cross country team won the state qualifying meet in Atlantic on Thursday night and qualified for the state cross country meet.  The Bombers scored 65 team points followed by Glenwood who finished 2nd with 78 points.  Ellie Twedt led the Bombers finishing third overall in a time of 20:09.  Lauren Matthews finished 7th with a time of 20:34 and Caitlin Maher finished 10th in a time of 20:41.  These three competitors all qualified as state individuals.  Summer McVicker finished 21st (21:34) and Josie Fleischmann finished 24th (21:42) to round out the Bomber's scoring.  Rachel Wohlgemuth (25th - 21:42) and Hailey Cole (30th - 21:54) capped the rest of the Bomber runners.

Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:

"I am really pleased with the performance by the girls tonight.  As coaches, we anticipate a score somewhere around 70-80 points, so scoring 65 was pleasing.  We knew that a regional championship was a possibility, but that most of our competition had been on the course before in other meets and that was to their advantage."
"Ellie Twedt continued to pace the girls with a 3rd place finish (20:09).  Lauren Matthews had a break through performance finishing in 7th (20:34).  Next was Caitlin Maher who closed out the top 10 (20:40).  Those finishes secured individual state qualifying status for them and got the team off to an excellent start.  Summer McVicker and Josie Fleishmann closed out the scoring with 21st and 24th place finishes (20:34 and 20:42).  Josie's performance was a solid bounce back performance.  Rachel Wohlgemuth and Hailey Cole closed out solid races with 25th and 30th place finishes (92 total runners in the race). "
"One very encouraging part of this race was the tight duo of Matthews and Maher that closed the gap with team leader, Ellie Twedt.  The emergence of these two has been integral for us.  Also encouraging is that we know any of the other girls have the potential to run with them at any given meet.  Hopefully, we will hit at all cylinders at state meet."
"Getting that regional championship was really important to us.  I think it shows that we potentially are one of the top 5 teams in the state and can compete at a high level.  We are running with more and more confidence, and it seems as if we are going to peak at the right time.  I am really excited to see what these girls can do against the state's best.  We will be ready to compete and represent the Ballard Community well."

The Bombers are back in action on Saturday, October 28 when they compete at the state meet in Fort Dodge.  The meet will start at 11:00 AM with the 3A women running at 12:00 PM.
