4-Peat: Bombers Race To Conference Title

The women's cross country team won the Raccoon River Conference Meet for the fourth consecutive year.  Led by Ellie Twedt, who placed 2nd overall with a time of 19:31, the Bombers then packed their next five runners within one minute of each other with Caitlin Maher placing 3rd, Brooke Loewe 5th, Rachel Wohlgemuth 6th, Meg Rietz 7th, and Josie Fleischmann in 9th.  Abbey Ross rounded out the scoring for the Bombers finishing in 12th place.  The Bombers scored 23 team points followed by Carlisle (57 points) and Winterset who scored 78 points.

Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:

"To put it plain and simple, our girls dominated the meet tonight to win their 4th straight RRC Championship.  We placed six in the top 10 and nine runners in the top 17.  Ellie Twedt ran a great race finishing runner-up to the state's #1 runner.  Caitlin Maher finished 3rd.  Both Twedt and Maher beat the 9th place finisher in the state meet last season who finished 4th in this meet.  A big Ballard pack finished 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th.  That pack included Brooke Loewe, Rachel Wohlgemuth, Meg Rietz and Josie FleischmannAbbey Ross closed out varsity competitors finishing 12th overall.  All of these runners (7) earned all-conference honors.  Kate Huisinga (15th), Ashley Wuestenberg (17th), and Mya Ehresman (25th) also ran excellent races for us.

The biggest key for us tonight is that we inched even closer to that 1 minute spread between our scorers which we are shooting for.  We started the season closer to 1:30-1:40 and are making progress.  As we inch closer and closer to that one minute barrier, we are getting better and better as a team.  Like the boys, we now look forward a week to the state qualifier at Spencer.  It will be a good regional that features #2 Ballard, #4 Heelan, #15 Spencer and 2 other teams that are receiving votes for the top 15.  We will have to run well, but we have shown that we can do that and I expect a good race next week."

The Bombers are back in action on Thursday, October 18 when they compete at the state qualifying meet in Spencer.  The meet will start at 4:00 PM.
