The women's cross country team placed 11th in the highly competitive Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday in Minneapolis. Shewaye Johnson finished 30th for the Bombers finishing in a time of 19:26.1. Ellie Twedt finished 65th in a time of 19:54.8 and Paityn Noe was right on her heels with a 67th place finish in a time of 19:55.8.
Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:
"The girls ran a great race today. We wanted to focus on two main things in the race. One was to get our runners out at the right pace based on the competition and the course. I think we accomplished that pretty well by moderating the start for some which would allow them to build up speed throughout the race and finish strong without fading. We did fairly well with that. The second focus was to try and bring the spread down between our 4th runner and the 5th-7th runners. Again, this went better for us. The gap between 4 and 5 for us was 54 seconds a week ago and was narrowed down to 43 seconds today. Still a bit of work to do in those areas, but we showed growth tonight.
We were led by Shewaye Johnson who finished in 30th place out of 505 total runners. She struggled a bit with pacing the last two meets and that cost her quite a few places. She bounced back today and ran much more strategically. She is a freshman and learning how to race against good competition. Next was Ellie Twedt in 65th place and she was closely followed by Paityn Noe in 67th. They ran in tandem most of the race and I really think that worked to their advantage. They are natural competitors and pushed each other through the hilly course. Their strong places helped us a lot in this meet. Closing out our scorers were Caitlin Maher finishing in 102nd place and Brooke Loewe who was 172nd. Josie Fleischmann and Rachel Wohlgemuth also ran close to each other throughout most of the meet finishing in the 196th and 197th spots. Meg Rietz fought through a tough start, which forced her to jump over fallen competitors and caused a pretty nasty cut across her leg to finish 274th.
We are very pleased with out 11th place finish in this huge meet. If you were to combine both classes there would have been 117 schools and we would have maintained that 11th place finish. Every team in front of us were ranked highly in their states and we were the top Iowa team on the girls side of the meet - beating 4A #4 team Linn Mar of Marion, 4A #15 Iowa City Liberty and West Des Moines Valley who is also on the verge of being ranked in 4A also. Most of the teams in the field are ranked in their state rankings. We are moving in the right direction and will continue to work in a way that keeps that progress going."
The Bombers are back in action on Thursday, October 3 when they compete at the Perry Invitational. The middle school, junior varsity, high school will compete. The meet will start at 4:15 PM.
