Walsh Named 2026 Iowa Cheerleading Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year
Coach Transformed Program Leading To Multiple State Championships
Ballard High School cheerleading coach Kaily Walsh has been named the 2026 Cheerleading Coach of the Year by the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches' Association, an honor that reflects both the growth of the program and the success it has achieved during her time at Ballard.
Walsh began coaching cheer at Ballard in 2018, and in the years since, the program has steadily expanded. Participation numbers have grown, more opportunities have been added, and the overall presence of cheerleading within the school has continued to strengthen.
One of the biggest changes under Walsh's leadership was the addition of a competitive cheer program. That move quickly paid dividends, as Ballard teams have captured multiple Iowa High School Cheerleading Championships. Highlights include a first-place finish in the Time Out Stunt/Tumble Division in 2020, Grand Champion honors in both the Cheer/Dance Division and Stunt Group during the 2022–23 season, and a first-place title in the Cheer/Dance Division in 2023.
In addition to competitive success, Walsh has focused on creating more access for students. She added junior varsity opportunities and expanded the varsity squads, allowing more athletes to be involved while continuing to develop their skills and confidence.
Those who know Walsh point to her emphasis on fundamentals, consistency, and team culture. Practices are demanding but supportive, and athletes are encouraged to grow as leaders as well as performers. That approach has helped establish cheerleading as a respected and valued activity within the Ballard community.
The Coach of the Year award recognizes coaches who make a lasting impact on their programs, and Walsh's selection reflects the direction Ballard cheerleading has taken.
Ballard is proud to celebrate Coach Walsh as the ICCA Coach of the Year and grateful for the lasting influence she brings to the Bomber cheerleading program.
