Bombers Drop Home Opener To Dutch
Pella Defeats Ballard 29-17
HUXLEY, IA —The Ballard Bombers kicked off their 2024 season with a tough loss to the Pella Dutch, falling 29-17 in the home opener at Richard Strouse Field. Despite a determined effort, the Bombers were unable to overcome a strong Pella squad.
The Bombers' offense had flashes of promise, particularly on the ground, where they rushed for a total of 189 yards. Senior Tucker Vitzthum led the charge with 72 yards on 9 carries, including a 15-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Mason Gatchel also found the end zone with his legs, contributing 41 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries.
The receiving corps was led by senior Jackson Wacha, who recorded 3 receptions for 59 yards. Wacha was also a standout on defense, leading the Bombers with an impressive 16 total tackles, including 3 sacks. Despite his efforts, the Pella offense proved too much to handle, consistently finding ways to move the ball and capitalize on opportunities.
Pella opened the scoring and maintained control for most of the game. While the Bombers were able to keep it close at times, crucial turnovers and missed opportunities ultimately sealed their fate.
Defensively, Ballard put up a valiant fight. Wacha's dominant performance was supported by senior Rhett Hedrick, who added a sack and a tackle for loss among his 6 total tackles. Junior Blake Brendeland also made his presence felt with a sack and a tackle for loss.
The Bombers return to action on Friday, September 6, with a non-district matchup on the road against Humboldt. The freshman game will start at 4:30 PM, followed by the varsity game at 7:00 PM.
