Last Second Kick Hammers Home Win For Bombers
Ballard Defeats Indianola 16-14
In a thrilling Class 4A District 5 opener, the Ballard Bombers secured a dramatic 16-14 victory over the Indianola Indians, thanks to a game-winning 35-yard field goal by sophomore Sam Hoffman as time expired. The win lifted the Bombers to a 3-2 overall record (1-0 in district play) and set the tone for their district campaign.
The tightly contested game was a defensive battle throughout, with the Bombers holding off Indianola's offense and relying on key plays to snatch the victory. Senior Tucker Vitzthum led the Ballard rushing attack, racking up 104 yards on 15 carries, including a 71-yard touchdown run that gave the Bombers an early lead.
Indianola fought back, taking a 14-13 lead late in the fourth quarter, but Ballard's resilience showed in their final drive. Hoffman's field goal sealed the win as time expired. "It's just my teammates believing in me and us coming out on top," Hoffman said in a post-game interview. "Ultimately, all the hard work we put in through the summer and fall is coming to show now."
While the Bombers leaned on their rushing attack, quarterback Mason Gatchel completed 14 of 22 passes for 77 yards, spreading the ball to six different receivers. Senior Rhett Hedrick led the receiving corps with 3 catches for 21 yards, while Parker Miller contributed 26 receiving yards. Vitzthum's dynamic performance on the ground set the pace for the Bombers, but it was Hoffman's precision kicking that proved to be the difference-maker.
On the defensive side, Ballard showcased grit, led by senior Jackson Wacha, who recorded 13.5 total tackles and 2 sacks. Junior Dillon Shoen was all over the field, finishing with 13 total tackles, while senior Caden Anderson recovered a fumble and notched 5 tackles, including a sack. Wacha also grabbed a key interception, returning it 50 yards, halting an Indianola drive and keeping the Bombers within striking distance.
Hoffman was perfect on the night, nailing all three of his field goal attempts and his lone PAT. His 35-yard field goal as the clock ran out secured Ballard's first district win in a nail-biting fashion.
The Bombers, now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in District 5 play, will travel to North Polk on Friday, October 4th for another crucial district matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
