Bombers Show Grit in Tough Home Doubleheader
Bombers Fall In Double Dual
In the opening meet of the day, the Bombers went toe-to-toe with Waverly-Shell Rock. While the visitors controlled the top of the singles lineup, Ballard found a spark at the bottom of the order and carried that momentum straight into doubles play. Waverly-Shell Rock jumped out to an early advantage by sweeping the numbers 1 through 5 singles spots. Eli Preston, Chase Krogman, Aksel Peterson, Kolbe Odden, and Breken Fleischmann all fought valiantly against an aggressive Waverly attack, but were unable to break through. The lone singles bright spot for the Bombers came at the No. 6 slot, where Dylon Marks put on a clinical performance. Marks dictated the pace of his match from the baseline, earning an impressive 8-5 victory over Owen Neuendorf to get Ballard on the scoreboard. Refusing to go quietly, Ballard stormed into doubles play and quickly claimed two out of the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Easton Ersland and Seth Hilleman looked sharp and perfectly in sync, cruising to an 8-4 victory over Waverly's top pairing. Zack Ross and Cameron Allen backed them up with a thrilling, clutch performance at the No. 2 spot, outlasting their opponents 8-6 in a battle of wills. Waverly managed to secure the team dual victory by taking the No. 3 doubles match 8-6 against Ballard's mixed pairing, bringing the final team tally to 6-3 in favor of Waverly-Shell Rock.
With little time to rest, the Bombers immediately transitioned into a conference clash against a deep North Polk squad. The wear and tear of the day showed early, but Ballard showed immense heart by fighting late into the evening. Just as they did in the first dual, North Polk jumped ahead by capturing the first five singles matches. Top-line players Preston, Krogman, Peterson, Odden, and Fleischmann faced relentless depth from the Comets. Once again, it was Dylon Marks who stepped up to stop the bleeding. Playing in the No. 6 singles spot, Marks engaged in a dramatic, back-and-forth baseline war with Atlas Esdorf. Showing incredible stamina and poise under pressure, Marks pulled out a grueling 9-7 victory, finishing his singles day a perfect 2-0. Ballard's doubles lineup showed incredible resilience in the second half of the meet, picking up three additional team points in tightly contested matches. Zack Ross and Cameron Allen provided the match of the night at No. 2 doubles. Locked in an absolute dogfight that went to a tiebreaker, the duo showed ice-cold composure to win 9-8 (3). The Bombers' depth shined late as the No. 4 pairing took care of business with a convincing 8-5 victory over North Polk's Hyden. Calvin Moss and Dane Mortensen capped off the night on a high note at No. 5 doubles, grinding out a tough 9-7 win over the Comet pair of McConnell and Keil. North Polk also claimed an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Despite the late surge in the lower doubles brackets, North Polk's early singles cushion allowed them to walk away with the 7-4 team victory.
Following the doubleheader split on the day, the Bombers move their overall season record to 7-6. Ballard will look to rebound quickly as postseason play arrives.
