Balanced Attack Powers Bombers to Top-Four Finish
Ballard Scores 89 Team Points
ALLEMAN — The Ballard men's track and field team turned in a well-balanced performance Tuesday night at the North Polk Invitational, finishing tied for fourth place in a competitive eight-team field with 89 points.
Ballard matched Dowling Catholic for fourth in a meet that featured multiple large-school programs, trailing only team champion North Polk (106), Roland-Story (102), and Ankeny (100).
The Bombers were fueled by a combination of event victories, runner-up finishes, and strong depth across distance, sprints, and field events.
Sophomore Axton Campbell led the way with a meet championship in the 800-meter run, clocking a winning time of 2:02.47. Ballard added valuable points in the same event as Max Davidson placed fourth (2:08.59), showcasing the team's distance strength.
Davidson also delivered in the 3200-meter run, finishing fourth in 10:22.11, while Austin Vance turned in a strong third-place finish in the 1600-meter run (4:46.41). Evan Newman added depth in the 1600 with an 11th-place finish.
In the sprints, Liam Hurst highlighted Ballard's efforts with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash (11.35), while Curtis Hinzman added points in both the 100 (10th, 11.83) and 110-meter hurdles, where he placed fourth (15.87). Chase Ihle also scored in the hurdles, taking third in 15.69.
Ihle was dominant in the field events, capturing the long jump title with a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches. Ballard nearly added another field event win in the high jump, where Bowen Benedict tied for second at 5-10.
The Bombers continued to stack points in the throwing events. Tyson Pingel placed third in the discus (130-3), while Carter Sparks contributed in both the shot put (8th, 43-3) and discus (11th).
In relays, Ballard's throwers relay team earned a runner-up finish (53.51), while the sprint medley relay took third (1:37.69). The distance medley relay added another strong performance with a second-place finish (3:50.63). The 4x400 relay team placed sixth (3:43.33), and the 4x800 relay finished sixth as well.
Additional scoring came from Jude Jones, who placed fifth in the 400-meter dash (53.82), and Grant Fulkerson, who added points in the 400-meter hurdles.
Ballard's ability to score across a wide range of events proved critical in securing a top-four finish in a tightly contested meet.
The Bombers will look to build on this momentum when they compete Thursday, April 30 at the Roland-Story meet, beginning at 4:30 PM.
