Men's Cross Country Takes Runner-Up Finish at Lynx Invitational
Ballard Scores 76 Team Points
WEBSTER CITY – The Ballard men's cross country team opened their season with a strong showing Tuesday at the Lynx Invitational, finishing second in Class A behind defending state champion and top-ranked Gilbert. The Bombers posted 76 points to edge out Waverly-Shell Rock (91) and No. 16 Nevada (98).
Senior Max Davidson led the way with a gutsy performance, finishing 6th overall in 16:53.35 despite battling recent illness. Junior Graden Hermann joined him in the top 10, placing 10th in 17:40.22. Austin Vance (14th, 17:56.72) and Parker Domino (16th, 18:20.03) rounded out a strong top four. Domino's time already bested his career personal record from last fall.
Owen Davidson (30th, 19:26.51), Isaac Swisher (32nd, 19:31.81), and Alex Weeks (43rd, 20:47.97) completed the varsity lineup for Ballard in a field of 110 runners.
Head coach Scott Barth said the Bombers accomplished their goal of showing potential against ranked competition. "The Gilbert boys are in a league of their own, but for us to grab second place and beat a state-qualifying Waverly-Shell Rock team and No. 16 Nevada was a great way to start," Barth said. "We're pleased with the results, but we know we didn't hit on all cylinders yet."
Barth credited the team's depth as a key strength, with multiple athletes pushing for varsity scoring spots. JV standout Evan Newman made a big leap by finishing 8th in the JV race, improving his personal best by more than a minute to 20:20.
"With Max bouncing back from illness, Austin not quite satisfied with his race, and our fifth scorer spot still up for grabs, we have a lot of room to grow," Barth said. "The encouraging part is knowing we've got more gas in the tank."
Up Next: Ballard will compete at Winterset on Tuesday, Sept. 16, beginning at 4:15 p.m.
