Zugay Punches Ticket To State Meet
Sophomore Finishes Second In Singles
Ballard Sophomore Kailtyn Zugay finished second in the singles individual regional at Pella on Wednesday. Zugay would pick up a first round win over Jenna Schell of Saydel 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the quarerfinals. In the quarters, Zugay would defeat Molly Sickels of Clarke 6-1, 6-2. Claire Smock of Pella would be Zugay's semifinal opponent and Zugay would defeat Smock 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the finals. In the finals, Zugay would fall to Pella's Emily Blom 7-5, 6-0 to finish as the runner-up. As runner-up, Zugay advances to the state tennis meet.
Vanessa Nop will play in single's action and win her first round match-up over Pella Christian's Laurey Johnson 6-1, 6-2 before falling in the quarterfinals to Blom 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Kiley Calvert and Gracie Ross would finish third in the field. The duo would defeat Bevington/Kathikar (Southwest Valley 6-3, 7-5) and Hagen/McCoy of Clarke 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) before falling to Roose/VanArendonk of Pella Christian 6-1, 6-3. The duo would win in the third place match of Ramirez/Rolenc of Red Oak 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) to finish third.
Doubles partners Jocelyn Hobbs and Ellie Volkmann won their first round match over Larsen/Mullen of Southwest Valley 6-1, 7-5 before falling in the quarterfinals to Else/Vandusseldorp of Pella 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 1-0 (4).
The Bombers are back in action on Friday - May 26 when Zugay participates in the State Individual Tournament. The tournament will be hosted in Waterloo.
