Women's Cross Country Opens Strong at Lynx Invitational
Ballard Scores 47 Team Points
WEBSTER CITY – The Ballard women's cross country team made a statement in their season debut Tuesday at the Lynx Invitational, finishing second in a tightly contested Class A field. The No. 14-ranked Bombers totaled 47 points, coming in just behind No. 12 Gilbert (43) and edging out No. 20 Humboldt (52).
Ballard's strength came from an impressive pack performance up front. Freshmen Avilee Miller (6th, 20:56.93), Brooklyn Shoen (7th, 20:57.79), Honor Jorgensen (8th, 21:06.64), and sophomore Raya Miller (9th, 21:10.96) ran nearly stride-for-stride through much of the 2.5-mile race before breaking into their final kicks. That pack finish positioned the Bombers well against ranked opponents.
Sophomore Nora Showman sealed the runner-up team finish with her 18th-place run in 22:44.52. Rounding out Ballard's varsity lineup were Grace Grundmeyer (20th, 23:10.16) and Kya Hermann (24th, 24:17.72).
Head coach Scott Barth praised the balanced effort. "It was a good start to the season for the girls as they went head-to-head with two ranked teams," Barth said. "Our pack of four was very strong, and with Nora finishing 18th, it solidified a second-place finish. The girls really embraced the pack-running strategy, and we'll continue to build from there."
The meet also saw a standout performance from freshman Kaitlynn Dunn, who won the JV race in her first career 5K. Her effort earned her a spot in the varsity lineup for next week's meet.
With four freshmen in the top seven, Barth said the potential for growth is high. "Our younger runners are talented and willing to push hard," he added. "Combined with the leadership of Raya and Grace, this group has the pieces to make it an exciting season."
Up Next: Ballard travels to Winterset on Tuesday, Sept. 16, with races starting at 4:15 PM.
